* Exactly what formation were Liverpool playing after Jose Enrique came on for Stewart Downing in the second half? 3-5-2? 5-3-2? 5-4-1? The players didn't seem to know for a good few minutes, but it worked in the end. As a neutral, one can complain about the spectacle being ruined by such bus-parking, but Kenny Dalglish won't care, and nor should he. Having gone 1-0 up against the best team in the country in the away game of a two-legged tie, he was hardly going to chuck on a couple of strikers and go for a thrashing. It wasn't pretty, but it was effective, and rather than criticise teams for these sort of tactics, perhaps some praise for doing what was necessary, and doing it very well, should be forthcoming.

* Is Andy Carroll actually any good? I ask this seriously, because while we can all agree that he's not a £35million player, it's really difficult to tell his quality. This game can be almost discounted because standing up front while Liverpool defended and chucked the occasional scrap his way was an utterly thankless task, so what of the rest of the evidence? In the 'Yes' column, we have that storming first half of the season at Newcastle, in which he bullied in goals for laughs and scared defenders witless. And in the 'No' column we have a year of awkward lumbering at Liverpool, for which there are a number of mitigating factors, some valid, some not so. We'll find out soon enough, but at present it isn't clear which the real Andy Carroll is.

hmmmmm

What I don't understand, City think Kompany wasn't a red and feel hard done by so surely they should be pleased the refs have fixed that error on their part
