I'm starting to get a bit of interest in my attempts to train/triathlon all year. A local newspaper are running a story on me next week and I'm going to try to turn it into a regular thing. I'm also being interviewed for Die Zeit for an entirely different thing but I'm using that to plug my blog. Next step is to try to get some sponsorship.

I've just been in touch with my local bike shop, who I have a pretty good relationship with, regarding sponsorship. They generally just deal with teams but they've asked me to put together a proposal and drop it in. Any ideas regarding making it look attractive to them? They're based in the town the paper is, so I've mentioned that, obviously I'll put links in my blog, Facebook and Twitter etc. Anything else you could think of?

Cheers

seriously, 365. I raised over a grand in on day on there after Trish gave me a double sticky (ooh err) mind you every man and his dog is at it now which dilutes the effect.

other stuff we though of but didn't do; pub quiz/raffle with all proceeds going to the charity. we almost had a local band reform and do a one off gig (sods didn't come through in the end) etc etc.

Basically if you're part of any community be it a pub or a club or whatever then use it as best you can.

Not that sort of sponsorship actually Webby, I'm hoping to get gear/clothes/who knows what from a shop. Basically I'm asking for their backing and I've to put together a proposal, presumably outlining what they'll get out of it.

oh right. well we weren't very successful in that either dispite my grovelling to the LBS and to Turner USA.

back to the start, what are you doing again and for what cause? surely you need to be a) appealing to their soft side for the charitable aspect but mostly B) you're wanting to explain that their brand should be associated with whatever it is that you're doing. don't limit youself to sports shops etc though, my points about pubs/clubs still stand. they can always buy you gear with their logo on or contribute to expenses in return for you wearing a daft cap with their name on in the paper.

I don't know about sponsored gear, but after getting caught in the pissing rain half way through a 24k run tonight I want a sponsored flunky to run next to me with a golf umbrella and a thermos of tea. :yapyap: :yapyap: :yapyap:

What do you actually need to know and I can probably help out a bit...

Cheers for the offer Herr L, only seeing this now. I've actually submitted it already, had to be in by yesterday. Basically I had to lay out what I was doing for the year, what sort of sponsorship I wanted and I detailed how much exposure/advertisement I could give the shop. I'm not sure anything will come of it but it's worth a shot.

Yeah no worries, have a fair few relatively famous relatives, maybe not famous famous, but famous enough to have sponsorships so I can always ask them what their agents do or what they did back at the start.

Let me bring the 100% nerd for a second....

I used to get our team sponsorship for online gaming and it was mainly about how much exposure we could give the sponsor, be it running competitions (for prizes offered by the sponsor), recommending products on our site and so on. We were in with a shout of being sponsored by AMD but then the game we played died so they told us to do one...oh happy days.

So ultimately I had to have a plan not just for me, but also for what I could offer the sponsor in return.

Cheers guys. LL if you could ask anyway that would be great. I've sent in my first proposal, detailing pretty much what you've said there Freefall - how much exposure I could get them from various races, website, Facebook, Twitter, some newspaper stuff etc - but I'm sure there's more that could be done. Any and all information is still greatly appreciated :toppabird:

Far as I know long term goals is the main one, also finding people in similar situations to you in the past and how far they ended up going and whether it had any impact on sales for the relevant company.

If you think you'll be on TV is the big one tbf
